ADHD Myths vs. Facts: Separating Truth from Misconceptions
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition where awareness is growing and becoming more understood. For children in particular, it was for a long time under-recognised and misdiagnosed leading to a lot of adults also now being diagnosed later in their adult life. There is a long way to go, especially with the lack of NHS care available for the condition due to the overwhelming demand for its services but here we try to explain the truth behind some of the myths surrounding ADHD.
Common ADHD Myths Debunked
Myth: You can’t have ADHD if you are not hyperactive. ❌
Truth: ADHD presents in individuals in three types:
- Hyperactive-impulsive type (Restlessness, impulsivity) ✔️
- Inattentive Type (Trouble focusing, forgetfulness) ✔️
- Combined Type (A mix of both) ✔️
Not everyone with ADHD is hyperactive, with many individuals experiencing the inattentive type. ✔️
Myth: You can’t have ADHD as an adult if you were not diagnosed with it as a child. ❌
Truth: Many adults have struggled with symptoms of ADHD since a young age but it has gone undiagnosed until they are into their adult years. ✔️
Myth: Only boys have ADHD. For girls it is rare and if they do have attention problems then it is Attention Deficit Disorder as they never experience the hyperactivity. ❌
Truth: Boys, girls, men and women can all suffer from ADHD. In particular they can suffer from both hyperactive and impulsive symptoms as well as the symptoms of the inattention type. ✔️
Myth: Only children have ADHD and it’s something you grow out of. ❌
Truth: ADHD often persists into adulthood. While some symptoms may change or become manageable with age, many adults continue to struggle with attention, impulsivity and executive function challenges. For some, symptoms may also get worse into adulthood ✔️
Myth: Medication is the only way to treat ADHD. ❌
Truth: Medication is just one way to manage ADHD. Treatment options also include therapy, coaching and behavioural strategies. A combination of strategies could be needed. ✔️
Myth: People with ADHD can’t focus on anything. ❌
Truth: People with ADHD can hyperfocus on topics that interest them, but can struggle with tasks they find boring or unstimulating. ✔️
Myth: ADHD is over diagnosed. ❌
Fact: While diagnosis rates have increased, this likely reflects better awareness and understanding of ADHD, rather than overdiagnosis. Many people still go undiagnosed. ✔️
Myth: ADHD is a behavioural problem. Children with ADHD just need stricter discipline. ❌
Fact: ADHD is a neurological condition, not a behavioural one. Children with ADHD benefit from positive reinforcement, structured routines, and tailored strategies to help manage symptoms. ✔️
